Why Yekgirtú writing system includes the character /ù/ which is unknown to previous Kurdish writing systems?

eu imageBecause the aim of Yekgirtú is to introduce a writing system suitable to all Kurdish dialects, it has necessitated the vowel /ù/ to suit the needs of the South Kurdish dialect group. The South Kurdish group has mostly used Perso-Arabic alphabet in its entire known records. Due to the lack of this High Central Close vowel in Persian phonetic system, the vowel /ù/ has not been represented previously for writing South Kurdish.

The South Kurdish group has produced the oldest Kurdish literary records  of any Kurdish dialect, as far back as the 11th century through Yaristan (Ahli Haqq) bladdery works and Baba Tahir’s Pahlawiat poetry. These records reveal medieval history Kurdish literature and contain rich vocabularies that are the treasures to the Kurdish language as a whole. Enabling the contents of the third largest Kurdish language dialect group to properly register its vocal system through Yekgirtu will enrich the Kurdish language at large.

Today the speakers of this dialect of Kurdish are again actively engaged in writing and production of an increasing amount of literature. The speakers of this dialect group have already coined and promoted the Kurdish language with new and words and terms such as bùshe for dialect, ùshe for word, mínewaní for research, mínewan for researcher, bizmandin for to test, and etc.

Below is some example of the modern text in South Kurdish dialect.

A modern poetry by Mr Reza Jamshídí from Sarpul-i Zohab (Kurdish: Serpíyel Zéhaw), 2004, Source kirmashan.com

Nazari asiman kew

Tirsim duware bùde cew, bíla shewísh bicúde xew
Nazari asiman kew, imshew erray ce cídinew

Derdid we giyan mang ú xuwer, yay rújh necídin bí xewer
Her cí tuway we bani ser, her cí tuway we bani cew

Malli ti ha le asiman, ewla tirek we keshkeshan
Bùshe Xuda bílídeman, wewsay ceweyli kallidew

Hem pirshe pirshi nùrid e, le xuwer shineftim sùrid e
Ti bùsh kí paxesùrid e, ta ger qijhí hell kenimew

Ta ley henaze tiyeyde ban, xewer resíde asiman
Mang ú xuwer ú hesaregan, cin ta xuweyan bisharinew

Ser gulli dari bayemí, ti ne fereyd ú ne kemí
Ezíze xasegey xuwemí, cùwe búd eger búweydemew

Yey hemike gull ha bawishid, yane Xuda daye beshid
Qiseyli xas ú xuwesh xuweshid, duware circiganemew

Bíl shan biyem we shani xuwed, bùshidin we zuwan xuwed
We giyani xuwem we giyan xuwed, sifrey dillim we lad xemew

Siyran ser seraw tiní, Shírínegey Perraw tiní
Cew kewegey Zehaw tiní, espen erray ballad kemew

Hinar xawin karegem, ey sewli Bawa Yaregem
Dawúd kew súwaregem, nezríg bíyatyay xuwezew

Bew ey gulliyla wa bike, weharítir we pa bike
Ey xuwere ja we ja bike, rújhú bike tiríke shew

Pirr le xuseyl kew kewim, wéney síyeylikí shewim
Gilare rasegey cewim, key dí duware tíyeydinew
